Hey kids, it’s great to see you again! Today, I’m going to show you how to transplant a tree or plant one if you’ve brought it home from the store. In this particular video, I’ll demonstrate how I’m transplanting a tree that has outgrown its bucket and needs to be moved to a larger space to support its growth.
Before we start, I want to thank Lubriderm for sponsoring this video. They offer a wide range of moisturizers to suit different skin types, from normal to extra dry and scented to fragrance-free. Now, let’s dive into the process!
But before we get started, here are a couple of dad jokes for you: Why don’t you see elephants hiding in trees? Because they’re so good at it! And what’s a tree’s favorite radio station? One that plays popular songs!
When transplanting a tree, it’s best to do it in early spring or late fall before the first frost. This provides the tree with enough time to acclimate and establish itself. I’m doing this in the Pacific Northwest, where we just had a lot of rain, making it a perfect time for transplantation.
The five key steps to successfully transplanting a tree are as follows:
- Dig a hole slightly bigger than the root ball.
- Prepare a mixture of potting soil and manure to provide rich nutrients.
- Add some fertilizer to promote healthy growth (I’m using a fish fertilizer).
- Gently loosen the roots to encourage them to spread out in the new space.
- Water the tree well, especially in drier climates, to ensure it thrives.
In my case, I have clay soil due to an old creek running through the area. So, I need to dig through the clay to reach the water table, ensuring the tree gets enough water to grow successfully.
Now, let’s start the process. I’ll dig a hole that’s the right size for the root ball. Once the hole is ready, I’ll prepare the mixture of potting soil and manure and use it to fill the bottom of the hole.
Next, I’ll gently remove the tree from its current pot and loosen up the root ball to allow the roots to spread out easily. Carefully place the tree in the hole, ensuring it’s at the right height, and fill the hole with the soil mixture. Firmly but gently press down the soil around the tree to secure it in place.
Finally, water the tree generously, ensuring it gets enough moisture to establish itself. In my region, I’m not worried about water scarcity since we have plenty of rain over the next six months.
And that’s it! The tree is now transplanted and ready to grow in its new home. Just remember to keep it watered, especially if you live in a drier climate. Thanks for watching, and God bless you!
