I stood in the third row, clutching a small bouquet of baby’s breath and pale lily valley. The sunlight filtered through the stained glass windows, painting soft golden patterns on the aisle.
She looked radiant. My closest friend for over fifteen years, walking toward the man who now held her future. As they exchanged vows, something inside me tightened and softened at the same time.
Forever was beginning right in front of me. And for the first time, it felt both beautiful and heavy.
We are nearing thirty now (actually 29). One by one, the people I laughed with until sunrise, cried with during heartbreaks, and traveled with on spontaneous trips are stepping through that sacred door. Some have already crossed it. Others are standing at the threshold, turning back to wave at me with bright, hopeful eyes.
“Come on! Hurry up!” they shout lovingly. “You’re almost here!”
I smile and wave back, my heart full of genuine happiness for them. But my feet… they don’t move as quickly as I expected. Not because I don’t want to, but because this particular path suddenly feels more serious, more permanent. The steps toward it demand a kind of certainty I’m still growing into.
There are moments when I meet someone who makes my heart whisper, Maybe this is it. The conversations flow easily. The laughter feels warm. For a brief while, the future doesn’t seem so far away. I imagine walking through that door with him, building a home, sharing quiet mornings, growing old together. The possibility lights me up.
But then the shadows appear.
The quiet voices in my head ask,
“Are you enough? Do you know enough? Are you ready to build a life instead of just dreaming about it?”
I see my unfinished parts, my fears, the places where I still feel like I’m figuring things out. And suddenly the door feels heavier. The distance between me and forever stretches again.
Yet strangely, I am not panicked.
I have come to understand that my pace is different and that’s okay.
While my friends are celebrating new beginnings, I am still deeply in the middle of my own becoming. I’m collecting stories. I’m learning how to sit with myself. I’m discovering what kind of love I truly want, not just the kind that looks perfect from the outside, but the kind that feels like home even on ordinary Tuesdays.
I’ve had adventures they may never know about. I’ve gotten lost in foreign cities and found pieces of myself there. I’ve built friendships that healed old wounds. I’ve cried alone in my apartment and learned how to comfort my own heart. I’ve tasted the sweet freedom of choosing my own direction, even when it meant walking slower than everyone else.
These detours are not delays. They are the soil where my roots are growing deeper.
So I keep walking calmly, gently, without forcing my steps. Sometimes I pause to admire the view. Sometimes I run a little when the path feels right. And sometimes I rest, because even the journey toward love needs breathing room.
I no longer feel ashamed of my slower pace.
The truth is, I want to arrive at that door not out of pressure, but out of readiness. I want to step through it holding the hand of someone who sees all my becoming and still chooses me. Someone who isn’t rushing me, but walking beside me with the same quiet wonder.
To my friends who have already crossed, I am so proud of you! Your happiness makes the world brighter. And when you turn around and call my name, please know I hear you. I’m not lost. I’m just taking the long, beautiful way.
Because forever is not a race.
It is a place I want to reach with my whole heart intact, my soul richer, and my love deeper from all the living I’ve done along the way.
One day, I will stand at my own altar maybe not soon, but when the time is gentle and right. And when that moment comes, I will carry with me all these precious years of becoming.
Until then, I’ll keep walking.
Warmly. Honestly. And with hope that tastes like quiet sunshine.
With Love,
— B
