We formed the Men’s Mental Health Social Interest Group to come together as a community to examine the stigma and prejudice against mental health issues in our culture that often prevents us – and men in particular – from getting the support that we need, and to work to destigmatize mental health issues. We recognize that part of that work often includes the sharing of our own stories.
During the course of our meetings, we decided to make a video/public service announcement to seek to help others. This is the result:
Eight men from The Good Men Project’s Men’s Mental Health Social Interest Group share from the heart to show that everyone is dealing with something and that those dealing with mental health issues are not weak, just human. There is no shame in mental illness. We hope that this encourages you to add your voice to ours and to share YOUR personal story.
If you are inspired to do so, please share your own story – whether in words or video form – and share it with the hashtag #NotWeakJustHuman

“Here’s the thing about The Good Men Project. We are trying to create big, sweeping, societal changes—–overturn stereotypes, eliminate racism, sexism, homophobia, be a positive force for good for things like education reform and the environment. And we’re also giving individuals the tools they need to make individual change—-with their own relationships, with the way they parent, with their ability to be more conscious, more mindful, and more insightful. For some people, that could get overwhelming. But for those of us here at The Good Men Project, it is not overwhelming. It is simply something we do—–every day. We do it with teamwork, with compassion, with an understanding of systems and how they work, and with shared insights from a diversity of viewpoints.” —– Lisa Hickey, Publisher of The Good Men Project and CEO of Good Men Media Inc.
Great project- real stories are the most inspiring ones. Thank you.
I’m very happy to have contributed but more so that the message is powerful and gives hope to many people that are going thru any type of mental illness. Everyone had a great message and Michael Kasdan did an outstanding job managing this entire project. I’m really honored!
Thank you, thank you, thank you. In your stories, you have told my story. Recovery is possible. I used to feel weak though I know I am strong. I’m human.
So glad to see this comment.
Thank You!
Thank you so very much for this message. After recently suffering from Severe Clinical Depression for the last 3 years, I have dealt with doctors that passed it off as a non-medical issue. This video and its efforts is evidence that such ignorance is prevalent in today’s society.
I’m glad this was helpful for you Tony…Enjoy!
I am most proud to have been a part of this. Thank you to everyone who joined me and to those of you who share this important message.
So honored to have been a part of this project and to be in the video. The social interest group was amazing to be a part of and I look forward to the hope this video can create for as many as possible.
I am truly sorry you believe there is a stigma to mental illnesses.

Harold, it isn’t something that we can wish away. The stigma of mental illness exists whether you believe it or not. Much like Gravity, Climate Change and the ignorance of trolls on the internet.
There are people who believe that, you are free to join them or not.
It is a clever disguise to excuse prejudice and discrimination. One need not fall for it.

. “The stigma of mental illness exists”
Yes it is does, and often more among health workers than among others ….
