President Andrzej Duda signed a bill on Tuesday that criminalizes accusations of Polish complicity with Nazi Germany in the ’30s and ’40s. Anyone who links the two together — including the use of phrases like “Polish war camps” to describe Nazi concentration camps located in the country — is subject to three years in prison. President Duda said this week that the law is intended to “protect Polish interests” and tried to soften its impact by adding that “[We] do not deny that there were cases of huge wickedness” involving the killing of Jews. But countries including the U.S., France and Israel have found that rhetoric to be nowhere near adequate and have condemned the new law. Poland was occupied by Germany during World War II, and more than 3 million Polish Jews were killed in the Holocaust. The BBC reports that “more Poles have been honoured by Israel for saving the lives of Jews during the war than any other nation,” but as CNN notes, there’s also a “consensus among historians that certain Polish individuals and groups did collaborate with the Nazi occupiers.” Over the past 14 days, “Polish Holocaust Bill” has a 26 percent positive score. –Alex Shultz
