This week Andy Grant is joined by photographer, producer, and mental health advocate, Mariangela “M” Abeo, to talk about suicide, depression and her portrait project, Faces of Fortitude, which is tackling the stigma around discussing mental health by giving people affected by suicide a safe space to share their stories.
“Suicide is a hot coal we don’t know what to do with, and we can’t hold for too long.” ~M
M’s Faces of Fortitude projected has interviewed and photographed 100 people impacted by suicide and mental illness in some way and has a simple, yet powerful goal, of turning trauma into something else and making a space for healing.
Topics Covered Include:
- What is Faces of Fortitude?
- What prompted it’s creation?
- What sort of feedback have you gotten with this project?
- Tell me how your sessions work?
- What is your vetting process?
- Do people see this as glamorizing suicide?
- What’s been your reaction to some of the stories people share with you?
- How do the men differ from women?
- What are you proudest about regarding Faces of Fortitude?
- What are your plans for this project?
- What helped you the most?
- How can people get involved or support this?
