Remembered as “al-Nakba,” meaning “the Catastrophe,” May 15 commemorates the nearly 700,000 Arabs who were expelled from Israel during and following the 1948 Palestine War. Most settled in Lebanon, Syria and surrounding countries, though many still hold on to the hope that they will someday be allowed to return. The “Right of Return,” long-championed by Palestinian activists and leaders, has become a sticking point in Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, with Israel balking at the prospect of taking in an estimated 5 million descendants of those expelled.
