To kick off proceedings – and for completeness (because we’re like that) – we’ve gone back to the very beginning of the year. From my estimations, it’s tennis’ Andy Murray stealing the show so far – a man many have accused of maintaining a dour Scottish demeanour. So far this year, he’s been on the receiving end, had his fiancé talk dirty and delivered some wit of his own.
But it all starts with Serena Williams and her coffee…
“I didn’t have mine this morning”
– World No.1 Serena Williams found herself on the wrong end of a 6-0 first set playing Italy’s Flavia Pennetta at The Hopman Cup in Perth, Australia. She asked the ballgirl to get her an espresso and it did wonders – she won 10 straight games to win the match. January 4, 2015
“44.5 degrees (Celsius) here in Perth today. Sounds hot but I’m used to it, having grown up in Dunblane (Scotland) where January conditions are very similar”
– Brit Andy Murray jokes about the weather during the Hopman Cup. January 5, 2015

“I feel like punching myself”
– Golfer Rory McIlroy was clearly unhappy with his third-round effort at the Abu Dhabi Championship. January 17, 2015

“I’ve watched Taken quite a few times – it kind of felt pretty much the same as that”
– Golfer Robert Allenby after being assaulted in Hawaii during the Sony Open. Allegedly. Maybe he watched it one time too many? January 20, 2015

“What happens in Russia stays in Russia”
– Russian tennis ace Maria Sharapova during the Australian Open when asked why she didn’t know whom her compatriot Maria Kirilenko was getting married to. January 24, 2015

“Yes obviously, proper kilt.”
– Andy Murray was asked during his stint “Down Under” if he would wear the kilt in the traditional Scottish way at his wedding to Kim Sears later this year. When pressed on whether that meant he would be ‘freeballing’ – no underwear – Murray said “exactly”. January 25, 2015

“’If’ doesn’t exist in sport. If, if, if. Never comes. The thing is you have to do it”
– Rafael Nadal was philosophical when asked what would have happened ‘if’ he had won that third set tiebreaker against Tomas Berdych at The Australian Open. January 27, 2015

“This is your time – go get it!”
– 19-year-old Nick Kyrgios said somewhat precociously to Andy Murray when they shook hands at the net after the Brit bundled him out of the Australian Open quarterfinals in straight sets. January 28, 2015

“I’m just doing this so I don’t get fined”
– Tiger Woods quotes Marshawn Lynch at his press conference after his career-worst 82 at The Phoenix Open. January 30, 2015

Kim Sears wears Explicit Content T-shirt for Andy Murray’s Australian Open final http://t.co/KhzYYxaT4b
— The Guardian (@guardian) February 1, 2015
The image can be more powerful than the word. Kim Sears wore the above during the Australian Open final featuring her fiancé Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic. This in response to the media having a field day with the apparently expletive-laden verbal grenade she threw in the direction of Tomas Berdych (chivalrously defended by her man) during Andy’s semifinal. Touché. February 1, 2015
