“The best times were always the summers,” begins Robert Reece’s fond recollections of steamy nights in Leland, Miss.
The best times were always the summers. The afternoons: muggy and humid. The nights: steamy and damp, thick clouds of mosquitoes filling the streets that we’d walk, with a can of OFF! Mosquito Repellent in one hand and a towel in the other, searching for girls, friends, or anyone who could break the monotony with a little entertainment. We only had a few crumpled dollars, but we could always buy a $.30 ice cup (we called them “teapots) or a $.25 soda. Now, displaced in North Carolina, I hope Leland, Mississippi still loves me as much as I love her.
