THE SUPERMODEL
“I once had a girl friend who was Miss Latin America. Not Miss Columbia, not Miss Brazil and not Miss Spain. She was the beauty queen over all other beauty queens. She boldly declared that she loved me. She told me I was exactly what she was looking for. I was flattered by this. I never had a woman tell me she loved me first let alone one who looked like her. She competed in fitness competitions and showed me off as her prize. I was enamored until one day at a business meeting she took some drugs, blacked out, became belligerent, and embarrassed me. The icing on the cake was when her daughter saw me at the front door after the whole scene. She looked at me and then shot at her mom, ‘Mom so this is your new flavor of the week?’ I never married this woman. I never saw her again. Apparently I was just one guy in a long line waiting for their turn.”
PHYSICAL BEAUTY CAN BE OWNED BY ANYONE
There is nothing wrong with beauty. That’s not the point. When swiping left or swiping right we often fixate on appearance. Some men are caught in a trance by the perfect waist, breast or bottom. Similarly, the feminine version of this is the trance astounding resources exude when a woman perceives complete safety can be provided from boundless resources.
Both are possessions which are owned by evil and good alike.
Why is that?
Everyone knows a rich a**hole. Everyone knows a shallow beauty. Despite these realities there is a tendency to glorify both at the expense of marginalizing virtue.
TEMPORARY FOCUS IS TEMPORARY SUCCESS
Temporary assets are promoted as more valuable than the permeant ones in secular society. In my previous article I discussed investing in permanent assets. You can read it in the publication Hello Love here if you’re interested in reading further.
Briefly, permanent assets are owned by the soul. The assets promoted in social media are assets owned by the body. The mind’s assets rely upon knowledge. The heart’s assets rely upon emotion.
Beauty and riches are transient assets of the body. There is no requirement for a body to own beauty. Most who are naturally beautiful are born with it. With the advent of cosmetic surgery some are buying artificial beauty. A butt job is an imitation of a natural butt. A breast job is an imitation of a natural breast. So on and so on.
Similarly, money can be a resource owned at birth. Money can buy the illusion of choice. Money can buy the illusion of freedom. Money can become a slaver if money becomes your master. We see this in rich homes where children grow up without any meaningful parenting. Or when wives are single married women emotionally comforted by their diamonds instead of their husbands. Or worse when drugs are the euphoria replacement for the euphoria one feels from true love.
In both instances, the assets of the body are temporary, fleeting and evaporate.
THE INTOXICATED MIND FORGETS
In truth, skin-deep admiration of beauty or riches intoxicates the mind with lack of reason. Every rich man will know poverty and every beautiful woman will know old age. Without distinction this reality will touch all of humanity one way or another.
These are realities. Anyone knowledgeable about investing knows people are guaranteed to experience losses. Anyone in business knows they are guaranteed to have bad years. Anyone who was once slim in youth has confronted the reality of weight gain in old age. Any older woman who had beaming non creased skin in youth is familiar with creases and folds of the skin from age.
Skin-deep admiration negates reason to bypass the assets which persist in value. These assets never deteriorate with age. These assets only grow in value. These assets become scarcer with every successive generation because it takes time for these assets to develop. These assets are the opposite of instant gratification. There are no short cuts to them. There are no surgeries to obtain them. There are no lotteries to win. Only persistent effort over time will award them to you.
REASON REMEMBERS PRICELESS VIRTUE
What The Response of Denying Skin-Deep Admiration Does:
· It promotes a sense of peace. Peace starts with valuing what you still have over what you have lost. There is a calm feeling in knowing you are loved for who you are and not for what you are. The replacement for the feeling of love is pride, excitement, comfort and enjoyment. All those emotions are fleeting. Love endures. Love is found in appreciation of virtue. These are the genuine assets people value over cosmetic ones — but many are tricked into choosing the cosmetic ones during their youthful naivety.
· It places emotional stability in your life. The feeling of love is not a sentiment, it is a choice. Love is very much sacrificial. Love requires you to sacrifice personal aspirations, personal goals, and self-centered approaches. This teaches you to live unselfishly. Selfish behavior might just be the cause of all human conflict. For those who are selfish always want what they don’t have. Those who are selfless are always happy with what they do have. A selfish person will lament about their age or despair over lost finances. They forget old age is inevitable as is lack of resources.
· It makes you the one no one wants to trade out. When you choose virtue, you become an irreplaceable commodity. This does not mean someone will not trade you out. It means they will not want to. There is always a wealthier man or more youthful woman at any given point. It is the nature of transient assets to transition to others. Reason commands this as reality. Any other conclusion is delusional. There will not always be a more virtuous man or more virtuous woman. Reason knows this. Virtues improve and gain value over time. This is the opposite of skin-deep beauty or riches which are transient by nature and deteroiate over time.
Three Ways To Train Reason Over Impulse (Use Them)
1. Box Breathe. If you don’t know what this is it’s when you take a deep breath, hold it and slowly let it out. Some trainers in the military teach this technique to people during fire fights. It’s measured in intervals of 4s. This is how I breathe during extreme stress, violent situations or blind-siding events. It allows clear decisive action over impulse knee jerk reactions. This will permit you to work on exercising virtue when the situations present itself. This trains an important asset of the soul called — self composure.
2. Use Cause & Effect Logic. Always try and use your rationale mind. See if the effects of your choice are positive. If you can conclude too many negative effects occur because of participating in a behavior don’t do it. Convince yourself don’t motivate yourself. Commitment is a choice not a feeling. Contrary to popular belief statistics cited in a previous article reveal lack of commitment was the number one self reported reason for marriage failure in a leading survey — not infidelity or finance problems. Cause & Effect Logic trains commitment.
3. Ask Yourself How Long Will It Last. Assess how long something will last. As humans we tend to drill in on a present negative feeling. You will not feel betrayed forever. You will not feel mad forever. You will not feel hurt forever. The moment of the feeling can be intense, but it does pass. By realizing most hurt is fleeting in its effects this realization can dramatically alter how you act. What’s the point elevating a feeling to top priority when it might only last a few days in 78 years of your life? It’s not even one percent of your total life span. This trains the virtue of reason.
The Value of This Philosophy
· This will lower your stress level instantly when you do this. It is well researched and proven.
· Emotional Reappraisal changes the way one thinks about feelings and as a result it can contribute positively to one’s emotional intelligence. (2)
· Positive Self-Help Interventions can be helpful to reduce depressive symptoms. (3)
