For most of her life, people told Michelle Auwae-Lapilio who she was or wasn’t. She’s too light-skinned to be Black, she’s too feminine to be a lesbian, and she was with men so she couldn’t be queer. All that changed, though, when Michelle looked inward and ultimately decided that she will be defined by only one person: herself.
