Raw water is unfiltered, untreated, unsterilized spring water that can be purchased from startup Live Water. The appeal of raw water is pretty easy to see, proponents say. After all, tap water is chemically treated, while store-bought is filtered to remove natural impurities. Live Water founder Mukhande Singh goes even further. “Tap water? You’re drinking toilet water with birth control drugs in them,” Singh told The New York Times. But scientists aren’t so sure raw water is as smart as it sounds. The Centers for Disease Control, the Environmental Protection Agency and various health agencies have all warned that raw water can harbor bacteria such as Cryptosporidium, Giardia and E. coli, causing symptoms like nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. And if that isn’t bad enough, there’s also the price tag. Raw water can cost anywhere from $16 to $40 dollars a jug. For those reasons, Social is giving raw water a hard pass, with 74 percent of the buzz negative. –Hugo Guzman
