Creativity is a non-negotiable part of life. For me, creativity and self care go hand in hand. While we hear a lot about the importance of consistent self-care, I have rarely (if ever) heard about the importance of including creativity in your life on a consistent basis.
Unfortunately, as life gets busier (with jobs, kids, etc), creativity is something I need to be intentional about setting aside time for. It is easily the first thing to fall to the wayside. But, I want to raise my sons to be creative adults. And, like anything I want to teach them, it’s important that I set a positive example for them.
Creativity can show up in different ways, but it is always a mainstay in my life. One day it may be building Legos with my sons. The next day it’s solving a problem at work in a new and different way. Another day, it’s busting out an adult coloring book and markers. Most days, it has something to do with writing.
I’m a firm believer that every child is creative. Walk into any daycare or elementary school and you’ll see the evidence first hand. My sons are the kings of creativity right now. And I never want them to lose that.
So, when they create epic drawings or games, I go out of my way to talk to them about it. I ask them to tell me the story about it. To teach me how to play the game. We build entire cities out of Legos, where the dinosaurs protect the city from alien invasion. I relish judging the nightly dance-off, loving every second of the differences in my sons’ dance styles.
It is one of my core hopes that my sons never lose their unabashed creativity. That the world never makes them dull that amazing shine.
