Less than three months after our first date, I watch in disbelief as that second pink line blooms into view, terrified of so many possible disasters. A gentle tremor in his hands but his eyes sure, he commits easily: “I won’t fail you. Either of you.”
If love could be measured in cups of coffee made with just the right amount of cream or his whispers to go back to sleep, I’ll get the baby, there’s no question. But it isn’t the loving that takes work, it’s everything else. And still each month, then year, he’s here—eyes always sure.
