Affairs are like video games.
They are a distraction.
Simple escapism.
“My wife/husband is so boring.”
And they are because you know them.
An affair partner is different.
Novel. Exciting.
New flesh. New experiences.
Yet, we all play at different levels.
Some of us are career adulterers (like myself, I might add), and some are newbies. Some are in the middle, playing until they get bored and go back to their real lives.
“Uh, there’s an easy setting! Play on easy!” some people might say. Except others might want a challenge. We’re all different.
But none of it is real.
When the session is over, you turn off the game… to be continued with all your points and positions intact. Right? Not so fast. Maybe tomorrow comes, and you play again.
Then again, maybe not.
We don’t know if we are up against a skilled gamer until it’s too late. You’re toast. Zapped, and it’s time to start over again.
They may break your heart.
Or break up your marriage.
You can’t compare affairs to your real life.
Quit wondering if he loves you.
He doesn’t even know that you talk too much during movies, and you don’t know how loudly he slams the door when he’s angry. We don’t see the temper tantrums. Or the endless escapism. When they retreat from all responsibilities to play a freakin’ game. Cheating is all a thin veneer of romance and fantasy — until they are backed into a corner fighting for survival.
Then you see past the facade.
You might see glimmers of the truth.
Regular people are flaky and unreliable.
But adulterers are a special sort of hot/cold/on/off/suck/fuck crazy sons of bitches on the planet.
Who knows why?
Guilt?
Narcissism?
Being amoral?
Selfish?
All of the above, usually.
The lies, ghosting, false promises, and incessant taking.
You’ll know the truth when it’s D-Day.
Shit-hits-the-fan day.
Life Blows Up.
Then reality hits.
No one comes back from this easily. There’s no “resume” button. It’s time to face the music and the consequences.
Affairs, like video games, are a fun distraction.
Except, whatever level you’re playing on, please don’t confuse it with real life. If you are going to cheat and actually enjoy it, you need to be able to deal with the endless games — to keep on playing.
