Cybersecurity is one of the most talked-about issues over the past decade due to the nefarious activities of hackers. In 2016, Symantec reported that the most effective bank robbers were armed with computers, not guns; billions of dollars were stolen in virtual attacks. While some of these heists were the work of organized criminal gangs, for the first time, nation states appear to be involved as well. Symantec uncovered evidence of North Korea attacking banks in Bangladesh, Vietnam, Ecuador, and Poland, stealing at least US $94 million.
Similarly, PwC surveyed more than 9,600 IT executives globally and reported that 41%of them had experienced at least one security incident in the past year. Out of those executives, 37% reported financial losses as a result. My business was hacked a couple of months ago and thousands of Dollars were carted away within a twinkle of an eye.This reduced me to point zero in my finances and I was gasping for air for the first time in my life.
How was I able to put myself together? It’s wasn’t easy but here are some of the stuff that helped me sail through my ordeal;
1. Stay Calm and Think Positively
Calmness in the face of adversity is a characteristic of strong personality. Bad situations will always make us sorrowful and weak. You can be tensed up and frustrated when the whole world is collapsing on you.
The starting point of staying calm under pressure is for you to refuse to react automatically and unthinkingly. Instead, take a deep breath to calm your mind and then think carefully about your next words and actions.
This isn’t natural because we are humans. But, believe me, I was able to stay calm, and by this, I conquered some consequences of acting on impulse without noticing.

2. Build up Yourself via Relationship
I was always around people when I felt the whole world was crashing down on me. Imean positive people who consoled and talked me out of my misery. People usually confide with anyone they see about their predicaments. This is wrong. 99% of people you tell your worries wouldn’t even help you. Some may be excited about it while others would care less.
Networking and building friendships re-invented me. I’ve always taken networking as a big deal and I am not overly amazed at the things I have learnt and the opportunities that I’ve been exposed. Research shows that people who enjoyed strong social ties had a50% increased the likelihood of survival compared to people with little or no social ties.
Thanks to the men associational group where I am privileged to be an active member, plans were made to financially restore me. Through their assistance, I was able to purchase raw materials for my company’s production.
3. Be Extra Careful
Many people learn from other’s experience, but if you are unfortunate by learning from your negligence or ignorant just like me, well, you got to be extra careful. An effort was made to keep my company’s operating system, antivirus and other software updated to take advantage of the most recent security features available. Most importantly, I hired a cyber-security expert to ensure I do not fall prey to hackers again.
As a result of incessant cyber-attacks, almost all the sectors in the world economy have put up adequate checks (security systems) to avoid being hacked. This is because, in terms of cybersecurity, everyone makes mistakes and no one is completely safe.

Small business owners all over the world are making a conscious effort to adequately protect their businesses against cyber-attack. In the maritime sector, cybersecurity has been considered by every level of the company in order to run ship operations efficiently and securely. In the financial sector, The Financial Services Information Sharing and Analysis Center (FS-ISAC) is leading the way against the threat of cyber-attacks with the “Sheltered Harbor” program.
Life is very interesting when things pan out exactly how we planned it. On the contrary, it’s disastrous when things are going bad and i’s bad business when you don’t have the slightest idea how to manage and overcome the situation.
