I remember the first time I ever heard my father say the words “I love you.” I was 21.
As a teenager, I said “I love you” and shut the door fast, before I could hear him not say it back.
People don’t always say “I love you” the way you want them to.
Yesterday, he said, “Drive carefully.“
Sometimes, on my way out the door, he said “Have fun,” sometimes “Be careful.” Sometimes, he didn’t say anything at all, he just waited up for me.
A long time later, I realized he was saying I love you all along.
