Full disclosure: I’m at a complete loss as to why or even how people refuse to acknowledge science. Literally, everything around me is a product of science, including the computer I’m typing this on, the lamp that’s illuminating the keyboard, and the internet on which this piece will be published.
By the way, am I the only one who thinks it’s ironic that people who don’t believe in science use the internet anyway?
“Evolution is just a theory.” How do you explain what a theory is in a scientific context? In what ways does a scientific theory differ from an idea, thought, supposition, or guess?
“Global warming is ridiculous. Did you see how much snow there was this winter?” How do you respond to this remark rationally? (To be honest, I’m looking for ideas here; I got nothing.)
“The earth is 6000 years old.” Are God and science mutually exclusive? If not, how do you address the discrepancy between the Bible and carbon dating?
“Immunizations cause autism.” This is another one to which I cannot respond rationally. How do you talk to someone about this?
What do we risk by living in a society where those in our government deny science? What must we do to protect our nation and our future?

Here’s the problem: The idea of “believing in science” actually makes little sense. Good example: For many years, medical science warned that eggs were a death bomb of cholesterol. The public was WARNED by the leading experts of the day to limit their intake of eggs to two eggs a week – and that using just the whites was preferable to using the yolks. Today, medical science says that was all bullshit. Similarly with salt: Everybody was told to cut salt out of their diets because it raised the risks of hypertension, strokes, etc. Once again, science has made a… Read more »
What bugs me is that the liberals will push science for some things that support their agenda but when science counters what they want to believe, they will go to the ends of the earth to disprove science. Hypocrates,
Well, Tom, with all due respect – conservative evangelicals do the same damn thing with the Bible.
Example: When the Bible preachers against being gay, evangelicals are all over it. OTOH, when Jesus himself talks about making the poor the priority, real social justice and so on – how do these same evangelicals stand with Paul Ryan and Donald Trump who are trying to replace Obama’s flawed bill with one that will literally kill millions who won’t be able to get care at all?
Hypocrisy is a bi-partisan disease, my friend.
