A young man comes to a new country, a new language, a new vulnerability.

I am an Immigrant
Miguel Gianfranco Guzmán Valle
I am an immigrant from El Salvador
I wonder about being in this foreign country
I hear people speaking in English, a language unknown to me
I see words on posters that I don’t understand
I want to understand when people speak to me
I am an immigrant from El Salvador
I pretend to know when I don’t
I feel bad about myself, when I am unable to communicate and express myself
I touch my throat trying to pronounce a word in English
I worry that I will never master my adopted language
I cry when I think of not being able to learn it
I am an immigrant from El Salvador
I understand how important it is to learn English
I say that I will speak it someday
I dream of talking and having a fluid conversation
I try to speak and pronounce the words correctly
I hope to be able to speak fluently and effortlessly
I am an immigrant from El Salvador.
