The dance cards have been punched, and the field now is set for the 2015 college tournament.
College basketball sports season is now at its high point, and a nation turns its eyes to it. The always-wild slate of opening round games kicks off on Tuesday. New memories will be made. Players you’ve never heard of will rise above and seize their moment.
And we will be watching, together, drinking in these moments from our “home court.”
This year, as is always the case, there are Goliaths, like John Calipari’s undefeated University of Kentucky Wildcat squad. And there are a slate of Davids, like Belmont, Davidson, or Harvard, each hopeful and determined to show that they belong, to pull the upset and make a deep run. There are also a host of programs whose identity has been forged under the glare of the Tournament lights, who have risen from also-rans to power teams, like Gonzaga and Wichita State.
There will be drama. There will be tension. There will be buzzer beaters that simultaneously lift hearts and break them.
* * *
We remember where we were as we watched stars being born: Steph Curry’s taking Davidson on his back in 2008, or Dwyane Wade doing the same for Marquette in 2003, or Mike Miller hitting a first round buzzer beater to help Florida stave off a massive upset at the hands of upstart Butler in 2000.
If you watched the tourney in 1998, you remember the shock and awe of Bryce Drew’s improbable lunging three-pointer that sent Homer Drew’s Valparaiso to a first round victory over Ole Miss.
If you’re a Duke fan of the right vintage (or any fan watching the tourney in 1992), you remember where you were when Christian Laettner hit “The Shot,” his turn-around jumper to beat Kentucky 103-102 in Overtime of the National Championship Game.
We remember the big shots. We remember the big stories. We remember who we were with, and where we were.
