But on Monday, the idea became U.S. defense policy, thanks to instructions from President Donald Trump calling on the Pentagon to create a sixth branch of the American military, one devoted to the final frontier. The announcement was greeted with some initial enthusiasm, which has since given way to skepticism. For starters, Trump cannot simply create new military branches, as only Congress has that power. Additionally, many within Trump’s own Administration have long opposed the idea, such as Defense Secretary James Mattis, who said last year that the Air Force was best equipped for orbit. On Wednesday, Mattis blew off reporters when asked about planning. “[The Space Force], as you know, is going to require legislation and a lot of detail planning that we have not yet begun,” he said. Finally, mounting outrage over the treatment of undocumented immigrant families at the Mexican border has many online convinced that the entire idea is just a distraction from problems on terra firma. Trump might think that space is the place for military operations, but 56 percent of Twitter users disagree. –Hugo Guzman
