It’s 14th Feb, 2026, Valentine’s Day; a day to celebrate love.
I came across the following video by Indu Khatri, in which she asks viewers to write a love letter to themselves, regardless of their relationship status.
I wanted to give it a try, and I did!
These days, I am writing on digital diary on my iPad.
I prefer writing on paper, but due to a lot of location changes and the ease of carrying and maintaining documents in an iPad, I have switched to digital media for journaling.
When I picked up a ruled page in my digital journal and started writing, words started flowing effortlessly.
I didn’t have to put in much thought about what to write.
I wrote that love letter to myself that my heart had always wished to receive.
Words flowed ceaselessly, as a result of which the letter came out flawless, with not a single sign of ruling out anything wrong.
It felt as if I had gone on a date with myself to a beautiful restaurant, carrying this letter in my hand.
I was waiting for the perfect time to read this letter aloud as a way of confessing my feelings to myself.
This exercise made me spellbound!
It changed the entire perception of myself.
As a result, I felt a sudden shift inside me.
I started admiring those qualities of myself that I took years to build and forgot the hard work behind them.
That may be because I started looking at myself through the eyes of others, and their biased perceptions formed my reality.
I realised that knowingly or unknowingly, I had accepted others’ perception of myself, which affected my confidence and created unnecessary self-doubt.
This exercise came to me as an eye opener and reminded me of the following quote of Rumi —
“Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you’ve built against it.”
Truly, how much we forget to take care of ourselves, wishing it to be done externally. Every time we assign this task of taking care of ourselves to others, we end up getting disappointed.
That’s because no one knows us better than ourselves. So, no one can take care of us in a better way than ourselves.
Then the above picture popped up in Google images as a memory. This pic was taken 5 years ago on Valentine’s Day when I bought myself some roses and my favourite black forest pastry.
I promised to make myself feel special on V-Day every year, and I’ve been doing that every year since 2021.
This year was different. As I couldn’t get myself anything special, I wrote a letter to myself.
How did you celebrate V-Day? What special did you do today? I would love to read your experience in the comment section.
