While Nicolas Cage might be a good man, he makes a good drug-fueled maniac, too. The actor has had his fair share of riveting on-screen performances: whether it’s his Oscar-winning role in Leaving Las Vegas as an alcoholic bent on drinking himself to death, his role as a corrupt, crack-addicted cop in Bad Lieutenant, or his take on a con artist suffering from agoraphobia, germophobia, and OCD in Matchstick Men, Cage has perfected the art of playing men on the brink of total self-destruction.
Yet his performances are every bit uneven as the characters he plays: for every Leaving Las Vegas, there are three Wicker Mans (which earned five Razzie Award nominations—Worst Picture, Worst Actor, Worst Screenplay, Worst Remake, and Worst On-Screen Couple).
Regardless, Cage never fails to entertain. Plus, if you were $18 million in the hole, wouldn’t you want to freak out, too?
