UCONN Rape Sketch: Comedy Gone Terribly Wrong
I’m not too much of an expert in anything except what I am either outraged or passionate about.
Daily, I find myself completely befuddled by society’s blind acceptance of things which anyone with a pulse and any moral compass whatsoever should be completely appalled by.
These are my opinions and should be treated as such. Fair enough. I respect others’ opinions as well but do reserve the right to use whatever platform I can access to call into question the sanity, validity, or ethical hollowness and hypocrisy.
Since Tailhook and before, a culture of abuse has existed in the in the military.
Once again, now that the investigation has begun at Lackland, there may be some hope for change in that culture.
Way too little, way too late.
Abuse and rape are rampant in the Native American Population. The numbers are appalling. Native American women experience the highest rate of violence of any group in the United States. Yet, it seems, not much attention is being given to this issue. On the tail end of the Sandusky and Penn State and newer scandals like at U of M, we are finally being forced to acknowledge that these crimes exist, and their public nature more than meets the public voyeur quota.
These things have been going on since the beginning of time. People have known and not said a word as well. When it comes to children, or forcible rape, most of us react the best way we know how. I find myself angry, and even on occasion, saddened by the incredibly lengths a human psyche can be manipulated, or damaged. I’m not sure I buy into the whole “evil” thing, but like most, I deal with life’s more distasteful issues as best I can.
It’s been going on forever. I just want to know, at what point did someone decide that RAPE is funny? Apparently, as seen on The Young Turks University, that has been going on for a long time too.

Tailhook was a gift to Pat Schroeder and the feminists. Turns out it didn’t actually happen. The iconic issue was the admiral’s aide who was assaulted. The guy they got for the assault was either about half a foot taller or shorter than she described–can’t recall–was wearing a different-colored shirt and, as with two of the Duke lax framees, could prove he was elsewhere at the time. Despite the pressure, the court decided he probably didn’t do it. Turns out the aide had participated in a sweaty group-grope and didn’t want her boyfriend to find out. As a result of… Read more »
“At what point did we decide rape is funny?”
I think this is the central sticking point when it comes to discussions about rape jokes.
The people who say they aren’t acceptable equate a joke with the real thing and argue that laughing at a joke which involves rape means that you think rape itself is funny.
The people who say they are (sometimes) acceptable don’t. Making the above question loaded and meaningless.
Jack, I so appreciate this. I am astonished at the deflecting, derailing, and denying that is the common response to your essential question about rape jokes. I don’t read the comment threads on articles on this topic anymore, because they can be so full of comments that are really mean or do not deal with the question straight up, the one you expressed here: “I just want to know, at what point did someone decide that RAPE is funny?” I guess it’s too hard a question for some people to answer with honesty and empathy, and without changing the subject… Read more »
Thanks Lori
Lori, I too find myself reluctant to look at the comment threads following articles about “Why is rape funny?” My biggest issue has to do with the people who are convinced that any subject should be off limits for humor: there is literally no talking to them. They will not change their minds, so they will never hear the other side out. They hide behind moralistic arguments like “It’s wrong” and “It’s evil” without acknowledging that others may simply disagree with them. If anything, they’re almost like religious zealots, whose belief in a system of morality will not be shaken… Read more »
You actually think that anything – ANYTHING – can be humorous and that thinking otherwise is “zealous”?
You really, really think that something like rape is funny?
What about genocide? That, too, funny?
Sexual abuse of kids? Hilarious?
I’ve heard funny 9/11 jokes and I distinctly recall being scared about my own father making it home okay on 9/11. I lived in northern NJ, and was still in HS he worked in Manhattan and when the towers fell cell phone service died; we had no way to reach him and the news was reporting all kinds of things that day, such as other buildings falling and the clouds of debris choking people, none of that keeps me from laughing about it now. I’ve heard holocaust jokes that I thought were fairly well done (Family Guy has done some… Read more »
So , now are guy who was really and disgustingly rude to a heckler is the same as a guy who rapes 20+ young men. Really what has this world come to.
I agree– what HAS this world come to ? The heckler in this case was a rape survivor.
Where did you learn that she was a survivor? I don’t think I ever heard that.
Which is not to say that I disagree with your points, just that I didn’t know that piece of information.
Unverified from several sources including local radio, TYT, and CNN (I believe ) I may have jumped the gun on my response since unverified, and if incorrect , apologies. However, I also dont know that a woman outraged at the audacity of rape jokes, and interrupting to stop it qualifies as a heckler either, but Tosh’s followup was unacceptable. I do believe there is an unspoken tendency on the part of some celebs — narcissists to make noise, whether actually married to the BS espoused for the express purpose of extending their fifteen minutes… Again… opinion.
“Native American women experience the highest rate of violence of any group in the United States”
