I am absolutely exhausted by the mentality that the only way to become a legitimate adult is to choose a life partner and make babies. Nothing can EVER be as hard, demanding, and tiring as raising a child., right? As for the people who mention “there are no horrors, no surprises, that can compare to parenting”. Really? Wow Liza. Whilst I appreciate your somewhat misplaced soapboxing, I feel you may have missed the point. He’s a comedian. It was meant to be a humorous piece. But like any good comedian (although I have to admit, I don’t find him nor the piece very amusing) should do, they hit a nerve. And I’m kinda glad he plowed right into yours. 🙂
Hard as it is to believe, being a parent imbues you with new super-powers. The most notable is a form of ESP which tells you to check on your child RIGHT NOW, at which point you will find them seconds away from doing something life-threatening. Nobody knows how or why it works, but it does. You also learn the difference between a good silence and a ‘they are up to something’ silence. I’m happy in my childless ignorance, but what about friends who feel they have attained some level of omnipotence by virtue of having children? We could be talking about anything, and they suddenly have answers for everything. I’ve asked several friends to put me down if I start behaving this way.
