I used to walk into speed dating events like I was going on a game show.
Heart pounding, palms sweaty, telling myself, “Okay, just smile, laugh, and don’t mention your astrology obsession too soon.”
But after enough first impressions to last a lifetime, I realized most people are asking the wrong questions.
We’re sitting across from strangers, pretending like “What do you do for a living?”
Is going to help us figure out if we want to wake up next to this person for the rest of our lives.
It won’t.
So after going on enough speed dates to write a memoir (don’t tempt me), I started asking better questions — deeper ones, more intentional ones — and that changed everything.
These aren’t your typical checklist questions.
These are soul-level conversation starters.
And if you’re tired of surface-level dating, they might just shift how you connect.
1. What’s something you’re currently healing from?
This one usually makes people pause.
Not in a bad way — more like a “wow, no one’s asked me that before” kind of way.
I once sat across from a guy who shared that he was healing from a relationship where he always had to perform — where love felt conditional.
I didn’t expect to get chills during a five-minute date, but there I was, suddenly seeing him not just as a potential partner, but as a person.
And that changed the energy of our entire interaction.
This question cuts through the small talk.
It opens the door to vulnerability.
And even if someone keeps their answer light, the way they respond tells you whether they’re emotionally aware or still in avoidant autopilot.
2. When was the last time you felt truly at peace?
Ask this and just watch people soften.
This one time, a woman across from me said, “When I turned my phone off for a weekend and went to a cabin by myself. I sat on the porch with tea and just listened to the wind.”
The way her eyes lit up? I could practically hear the trees.
Peace is personal.
It shows you where someone finds their center — and if their idea of calm matches yours.
If they say “at a rave in Vegas,” and you’re more of a “sunrise meditation” type… well, that’s useful to know.
3. What’s something you’re proud of that’s not on your resume?
Jobs are fine, but this question? This lights people up.
I once met a guy who said, “I helped raise my little sister after our dad left. She just graduated college. I don’t talk about it much, but I’m really proud of that.”
Tell me that doesn’t say everything about his character.
This question taps into someone’s values — what they cherish, what they’ve chosen to give their energy to.
Forget job titles.
I want to know who you are outside the hustle.
4. Who in your life knows the real you?
This one gets surprisingly intimate fast — and that’s the point.
The best answers usually involve a best friend, a sibling, or someone who’s seen them cry and stayed.
But if someone shrugs and says “I don’t know if anyone does,” it opens a different kind of window.
It’s not necessarily a red flag — but it is a red thread.
Something to tug on gently.
It can tell you how open (or guarded) someone might be in a relationship.
5. What’s a belief you’ve outgrown?
I still remember this one guy who said, “That I had to be hyper-masculine to be taken seriously. Turns out, softness isn’t weakness — it’s connection.”
I almost fell off my chair.
This question invites stories of growth, of internal revolutions.
It gives you a front-row seat to who they used to be — and how far they’ve come.
And if you’re someone who’s constantly evolving (which, let’s be honest, you probably are), you want a partner who gets that language.
6. What’s your relationship with your phone like?
It sounds silly, but this one’s a modern love litmus test.
The guy who said, “Oh, I’m glued to it 24/7, I hate being alone with my thoughts”?
That was… informative.
Contrast that with someone who shared how they deleted Instagram to feel more present — and you see the spectrum.
Phones aren’t the enemy.
But how we use them says a lot about how we value presence, boundaries, even intimacy.
In five minutes, this question can show you whether you’re dealing with a distraction addict or someone who knows how to be here.
7. What kind of love feels safe to you?
The first time I asked this, the man across from me exhaled and said, “The kind where I can mess up and not be shamed for it. Where we fight fair, not to win.”
I felt my whole nervous system unclench.
Because real love isn’t just chemistry — it’s emotional safety.
And this question opens a doorway into what someone needs to feel secure, seen, and held.
If their version of love doesn’t feel safe to you, better to know that now than six months in.
8. What’s something you’ve unlearned about relationships?
Ask this if you want to know whether someone’s done their real work.
Answers I’ve heard include:
- “That jealousy is proof of love.”
- “That love means fixing people.”
- “That my needs don’t matter.”
It’s not about perfection. It’s about awareness.
This question shows whether someone’s still repeating the past — or actively rewriting it.
9. How do you like to be supported when you’re struggling?
This might be the most underrated question in dating. It’s not just about love languages — it’s about emotional regulation.
One person said, “Honestly? I just need space. I process alone.”
Another said, “I love when someone checks in with tea and reminds me I’m not a burden.”
Both are valid — but very different.
And knowing this early on can save a whole lot of confusion and mismatched expectations down the road.
10. What are you currently manifesting or dreaming into your life?
This isn’t about whether someone believes in “manifestation” in a woo-woo way.
It’s about vision. Direction. Desire.
I’ve had people say:
- “Financial freedom.”
- “Living off-grid.”
- “Meeting someone who feels like home.”
Dreams reveal values.
And if someone lights up talking about their future?
That tells you everything about where they’re headed — and whether you might want to walk beside them.
It’s not just about the answers — it’s about how they answer.
Do they light up when they talk about their passions?
Are they dismissive or excited?
Are they asking you thoughtful questions back?
Speed dating is about making quick but meaningful assessments.
The right questions don’t just help you find a date — they help you find the right date.
And honestly, that’s worth way more than a night of awkward small talk.
So the next time you find yourself across from someone new, skip the boring stuff.
Ask what matters.
And maybe — just maybe — you’ll walk away with something real.
