Do you ever come home and feel that your living space is just too empty, too quiet? Well, if you want a little more excitement (and love) to your life, then adopting a pet is one of the best ways to bring some much-needed happiness into your world. Now, should you adopt from a shelter or a rescue organization, you will also get the added benefit of saving the life of an animal in need. In return, you can expect endless amounts of love and gratitude. By default, dogs are especially loving creatures (if you know how to treat them right). Here are 5 reasons why you might want to bring a pet into your home to make it—and yourself–feel more alive.
1. Adopting is humane
All animals are unique with their own personality traits and behaviors. Rescued animals, specifically, have a special connection to their owners, as opposed to those that are purchased from a breeder. Unfortunately, breeding, nowadays, is often a very inhumane and commercial process. By adopting, you’re doing your part to put a stop (or at least apply an emergency brake) to this horrible act.
If you feel pets are too much responsibility, know that there are countless resources and guides online to make things easier for you. From what type of breed to adopt (the one that draws you in, naturally!) to specific types of pet grooming, everything you need to know is just a few keyboard clicks away. It might seem scary at first, but adopting a pet is just like moving in with a new roommate: You’ll start to understand each other in due time.
2. You’ll become part of a community
Rescue organizations love their animals and want to make sure they go into the right hands. So, as a way to stay connected, many rescue organizations try to connect other owners to each other and create a network of like-minded people. From Facebook groups to alumni meet-ups, pets can bring a purpose and a sense of belonging to your life. These type of communities are a great way to meet new people, bringing together pets and their humans in an environment of camaraderie. If you’re looking to make new social connections and share pet care tips, give these communities a try!
3. You’ll save money
If you’ve been on the fence about adopting or buying a specific breed, know that purchasing a fancy breeder dog can set you back up to a thousand dollars. Of course, this doesn’t take into consideration other associated costs (monthly and otherwise). Adoption, by comparison, can be just a couple of hundred dollars (if not free). Even better, the price often includes spaying/neutering, as well as initial vaccinations. Now, if you do end up paying some money, know that it’ll be put to the best use, such as subsidizing the care and feeding of other animals in need.
4. You help stop breeding facility cruelty
Did you know that an estimated 1.2 million dogs are euthanized in puppy mills each year? These dog breeding facilities prioritize profit over the health and well-being of dogs through horrible and inhumane practices. Unfortunately, there aren’t enough homes for all the animals born each year. You, however, can help break this cycle of pet overpopulation. Although just adopting a single pet might not seem like a lot, you’re indirectly raising awareness and spreading the word. Boiling it down, adopting a shelter animal means you’re doing your part to end such cruel practices.
5. Your home will thank you
Ultimately, adopting a pet will brighten your day each time you walk through your front door. For one, most pets from shelters are already house-trained. So, while you’re saving a pet’s life, you might also be saving those of your rug and furniture, as well. Putting that aside, what makes pets such great companions is that, according to the research, pets make us happier, healthier, and give us a sense of belongingness. So, for those dealing with depression or loneliness, getting a dog can be a great way to tackle social isolation. Plus, taking them out for a walk improves your physical health, as well. In return, they’ll love you, forever.
