…He is a Man
Dear Sons,
I’ve written letters to you about your mother, your bodies, your manhood, your friends, women, family, education, your soul, and time. Now it’s time for a letter about your father.
Your father works, plays, cooks, cleans, earns money, saves it, spends it, travels, reads, writes, eats, minds his health, gets sick, bounces back, cares for his family and friends, communicates fairly, believes in the good of other people, knows there are jerks in the world, tries to be 100% honest all the time, has lied, has told the truth, has corrected himself, has admitted fault, has succeeded, has failed, has gone to school, has learned, has won, has lost, seen a decent amount of the world, wants to still see so much more (with you two and your mommy), has a lot more to do in life, has a lot more living to do, likes movies, loves music, good food, good company, is a sports fan, but not a fanatic, loves to have fun, enjoys his quiet time, and some solitude now and again, doesn’t mind a little noise and chaos, loves to be entertained, loves having friends, but is probably at heart a loner, has felt the ultimate high of loving and knowing a god, has also understood that there is no such thing, pretty much now believes that talking to something—the Virgin Mary, or Buddha, or just the universe—is just as good as anything, loves holidays, especially New Years and Independence Day, is a feminist, and a masculinist, has laughed until he cried, is known to cry and not be ashamed at all about it, has done some amazing physical challenges, as well as kept himself parked for a while, liked, loved, loved some more, let go, found love, the truest, hasn’t let go, won’t let go, found the two most amazing souls in you two young men, and has loved. He loves, loves, loves his life. He has his ups, his downs, his superpowers and his kryptonite. He is strong, he is weak. He is your father. He is a man.
