With all of the challenges of climate change facing humanity, from overheating oceans, to diminishing glaciers, from weeks of flooding and landslides to mega fires destroying millions of acres, we have an unfortunate habit of reviewing these disasters in terms of their economic costs.
What we have been looking at more recently, however, is the biological cost to the environment. How many animals are affected, are their habitats being destroyed, are their lifecycles disrupted, and we have begun to ask, if they are becoming extinct, what will that mean for us?
But extinction is just one of the many threats affecting our planetary biodiversity and we are just beginning to analyze the future of life on Earth as the world heats up and begins a transition to a new normal.
It is looking more and more likely our governments will not make the investments necessary to protect the Earth from the 1.5 degree temperature rise forecast to cause a cascade effect on the environment. Are we being left with no choice but to attempt the dangerous longshots of geo-engineering in order to bring temperatures down? If they work, they could buy us time. Yet, if they work, will they just delay any investment in protecting the environment through a change to renewable energy?
What is the future of biodiversity on Earth? Next on Climate Change by the Elements?
