It’s that time of year again. You’ve put away the haunted house and the weather is getting chilly. It’s time to sprout some facial follicles to keep that upper lip warm.
If you need a better reason than a warm upper lip, November is known as both “No Shave November” and “Movember” and men all over are growing facial hair in support of a great cause. Movember began in Australia almost 10 years ago and it has spread all over the world since.
In 2012, Movember Canada added men’s mental health to the existing campaign about prostate cancer. This important issue affects 1 in 5 Canadian men. Men’s suicide rate is three times that of women. In America according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide is the third cause of death among African-American males between ages 15 and 24, behind homicide and accidents. A report from the U.S. Surgeon General found that from 1980 to 1995, the suicide rate among African-Americans ages 10 to 14 increased 233 percent, as compared to 120 percent of whites.
What Movember is trying to do is to get guys to talk about their health, and that is so important.
The editors of For the Love of Men want to celebrate this month with a mustache-a-day for the rest of November. And don’t forget dudes (and ladies), you can donate to Movember.
My First Pick HAS to be Tom Selleck. Everyone loves Thomas Magnum, from the television series Magnum PI!
When teenage boys spout those first few lip hairs on their upper lip, those hairs aspire to be Tom Sellecks’s mustache. His mustache is so glorious there is a band named after it.
