I would have never said this, not even to my mom.
Love is something unique, secretive, heartbreaking; yet, so moving. I had never fallen in love before. Deep in my mind, I thought I was destined to be that rich uncle that drinks martinis at family gatherings.
Well, I might as well argue for a missing olive. However, one day everything changed.
It was the summer of 2019. The day was hot, humid, sunny, and toasty. I entered the subway station in a rush, the train was 5 minutes away.
That day, I was planning on going to the Tribeca Greenmarket in Manhattan.
I swiped my Metro card, $15 left, and I ran to the train; the door barely missed the back of my shoe. I immediately looked for a seat like a barn owl looking for a meal. I ended up sitting at the end of the compartment in a lonely orange seat.
Once I sat, I looked up and saw the most beautiful man.
It was like seeing the model from the Giorgio Armani ads in all it’s glory; I just hope that he didn’t see me drool.
Right now, I could care less about him; let’s call him Scott instead.
Scott was around 6 feet tall, with a lean muscle build. He had dark blue eyes that resembled the night sky, with black hair that reminded me of the ocean.
His shirt was slightly raised, just enough to see the abs.
I tried not to look at him, acting as if I was reading the ads on the wall behind him. Honestly, I just couldn’t keep my eyes off him.
Soon, we were looking at each other.
I would not want to say love at first sight. However, that’s what I felt.
As he boarded off the train on 42nd St, he handed me a piece of paper. It was his telephone number, with “text me” written on the lower edge.
I honestly thought this was a joke.
It took me a few days to make my mind up, should I text him or not?
I just remembered his soft smile, and how it made me feel a pinch in my stomach. It was stronger than butterflies, but little did I know it was a warning.
Maybe I should have followed instructions and texted, but no, I called…
Each ring of the phone waiting to be picked up made me more nervous. What if he doesn’t pick up? What if he lied and it was not his phone?
I waited in line until I heard:
“Hello”
That was the moment everything changed. It was a subtle female voice, with a fresh sound of youth and energy.
I thought boom… that’s his sister. No, it was his girlfriend.
Scott, the man I had just met on the train was in a relationship. What plans did he have with me?
At the time of the call, I didn’t know what to do; I was on mute. I realized that I had fallen into the hands of a player.
Thinking about it, now I see as something comical.
I hung up the phone, my heart was pounding and soon I was in tears. I must tell you, this was mainly caused by shock.
In terms of common sense, I shouldn’t have called.
I mean, who calls a stranger that gives you their number; especially, when you meet them on a train and they tell you to text?
This leads me to think that as humans who seek love and understanding, it is easy to create false expectations. We all want to just feel appreciated.
Due to the circumstances, I did not contact him again; unless I wanted to become a homewrecker. If I wasn’t that type of person, he would have been one to risk it for; looks and everything.
I just cannot believe how quickly I was completely infatuated and how soon my bubble popped. I didn’t even make it to the first kiss or even the first date.
In the end, you just never expect to meet someone on the street that has this level of impact on your life.
However, I learned something…
First: don’t trust strangers on the train.
Second: be careful of players.
If you had any similar experiences to mine, let me know in the comments below. I would love to hear how players have affected your love life. We got this. Plus, we must not give up on love; we will eventually find the right one.
