We were so close
The touch of the future was on our fingertips
The horizon of endless possibilities in front of us
The hope of an endless, effortless partnership
We were one kiss away from heaven
And two heartbeats distant from forever
The kind of love that needed no expression
A connection that set hearts a-sail
The magic floated in our shared space
And all was ours with a simple inhale
But it only took a year or so
All that we were had vanished
And I was “someone you used to know”
How I miss the sunlight-splash across your face
Your youthful glow and boundless ways
The way you looked at me with such pure grace
It was all right there and we let it get away
What I’ve learned — it’s true what they say,
“Close only counts in horseshoes…and hand grenades”
