I used to think love was about bending, shaping, and sometimes breaking myself to fit into someone else’s world. I thought that if I shifted a little here, smoothed out a rough edge there, maybe I’d be easier to love. Maybe I’d become someone worth holding on to. But the truth is, that version of me wasn’t real. It was a reflection of what I thought someone else wanted, not who I truly am.
Love should never feel like a ultimatum. It shouldn’t make you question your worth or force you to put away the parts of yourself that make you unique. I’ve been there — twisting myself into knots, hoping that by changing just enough, love would feel right. But in the end, all I was left with was emptiness, a hollow shell of a person who had forgotten how to be themselves.
There’s this ides that love is sacrifice, but I think that’s only true when the sacrifice doesn’t mean losing yourself. Sacrificing your time, your energy, even you comfort for someone you care about — that’s love. But sacrificing your soul, your essence, the very things that make you you?
That’s not love — that’s erasure.
I’ve learned that real love doesn’t ask for that. It doesn’t demand a version of you that isn’t authentic. Love, in its truest form, meets you where you are. It embraces your quirks, your imperfections, and yes, even the parts of you that are hard to love. It says, “Stay exactly as you are, because that’s exactly who I fell for.”
So would I change myself for love?
No. Not anymore. Because the right kind of love will never require it. It will push me to grow, to become the best version of myself, but never at the cost of my identity. Love should build, not break. It should heal, not hurt.
And I refuse to be anything less than who I am just to fit someone else’s idea of love. If I have to change who I am to make it work, then that love was never meant for me anyway.
