Against the backdrop of growing awareness of the widespread and devastating effects of traumatic brain injuries such as concussions, CTE, and brain damage, caused by repetitive hits to the brains of football players, young and old, many of the very NFL players who helped define the game are coming to the conclusion that they would not have played if they knew and that they would not let their children or grandchildren play.
Among the growing list of players that are speaking out are “man’s men” football icons like Bo Jackson, Mike Ditka, Terry Bradshaw, Harry Carson. When these men speak on this topic, we should listen.
To help spread awareness and push this important conversation forward, The Good Men Project’s Disposability of Men Social Interest Group is launching the #WouldYouPlayIfYouKnew Campaign:

The Disposability of Men/CTE Social Interest Group
Tuesday at 9 pm Eastern/6 pm Pacific
The Disposability of Men/CTE Social Interest Group will begin by focusing on concussions, Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), and violence, but we will also expand out to discuss the larger issues of how men are treated in times of war, in times of crisis, in the workplace, and how they are portrayed in the media. This is a way for people interested in these issues to come together to talk about it in a community of people who can learn, grow, and create social change together, whether through writing on the topic, creating videos, podcasts, activist campaigns, and building a network to amplify our message. The Disposability of Men Social Interest Group will create content, interface with other groups working in the area, and forge a path to actual social change. This group will be led by Good Men Project Director of Special Projects Michael Kasdan.

“Here’s the thing about The Good Men Project. We are trying to create big, sweeping, societal changes—–overturn stereotypes, eliminate racism, sexism, homophobia, be a positive force for good for things like education reform and the environment. And we’re also giving individuals the tools they need to make individual change—-with their own relationships, with the way they parent, with their ability to be more conscious, more mindful, and more insightful. For some people, that could get overwhelming. But for those of us here at The Good Men Project, it is not overwhelming. It is simply something we do—–every day. We do it with teamwork, with compassion, with an understanding of systems and how they work, and with shared insights from a diversity of viewpoints.” —– Lisa Hickey, Publisher of The Good Men Project and CEO of Good Men Media Inc.

This has personal, as well as professional, resonance for me. And I’ve shared my concerns with my children growing up. One son has five children, three girls and two boys. The girls have all played volleyball or involved with dance. The two sons, twin boys, played baseball, basketball, and football, as kids, but decided football was their passion and, like many, dreamed of playing in the NFL. They played college… Read more »
