My Uncle’s DUI
by Alejandra Ruiz
A few weeks ago my Uncle Esquiel was in a car crash He sped through a red light somewhere In Hollywood. The driver from the car he crashed into was hurt, but not seriously. My uncle was arrested for driving under the influence and spent two nights in jail.
His small, green, four door Toyota (what model) was totally trashed. The front of the car was smashed in so badly that even if the exterior damage would be repaired the car the car would still be useless due to all the twisted metal under the hood.
If it were up to me, I would have let my uncle stay in jail until his court date. I would not have bailed him out (who bailed him out), because my Uncle Esquiel, like my dad, is an alcoholic. And like my dad, he promises to quit drinking, but never does.
Shortly after my uncle’s DUI arrest my mom warned by dad that if he ever is arrested for DUI, that night, right then and there, she will sign papers to have him sent back to Mexico.
I worry all the time about my dad drinking and driving. Even if he’s had only one sip of booze.
I want him to quit.
And every night I hope that he’s learned his lesson before something tragic actually happens.
