Every time I buy a new television, the first thing I have to do is constantly mess with the settings.
I don’t like the color, how bright the screen is, maybe the contrast is a little bit off? I can be a little bit OCD, I fully admit this. Sometimes It will take me a couple of weeks or even a month to finally get the settings to a place I think is “perfect’. Once it’s done, I can sit back relax and just enjoy my entertainment, be it movies or video games (more the latter than former). I can just focus on whatever’s in front of me. BUT, if the power were to ever go out or I had to give my tv a “hard reset”, I would have to start this process all over again.
I feel that this same process could be said for our lives. We all have our “Default” setting and I’ll be honest with you, most of the time our default setting is not a good place to be. It’s boring, it’s stagnant, it’s comfortable. It’s just bland. You have to turn the color up to give it some flavor. Add some brightness so you can see everything clearly! I know, I know, this “analogy” can sound kind of lame, I agree. Yet, I am dead serious when I write this stuff. The worst thing you could do in your life is to never experiment, never try anything new, never get uncomfortable.
There is a reason television sets have this kind of menus and settings to mess with the display. They understand everyone has a certain way they want their television sets to look! Some really enjoy seeing every little detail and have high brightness, some like a very cinematic look, some want to watch something in 30fps and others like the realistic look of 60fps. People know how they want their display to look.
The question is, do you know what you want to display to the world?
What kind of color you want to give? Do you want to shine bright for all to see? Or do you want to stay “neutral” and never adjust anything.
Whatever display you want to show to the world, don’t let it be the default seeing.
It’s not you! It never was you, be your own person, don’t be the person next door or the person you idolize on Instagram. Be your own unique display.
I use to struggle with this most of my life, they call it “image issues”. If I didn’t have one person validate me, I would go back to my default setting because it’s “safe”, it doesn’t offend anyone, it doesn’t make me stand out or be a target. Yet, by doing that, it takes away everything I am.
I don’t want to be bland, you shouldn’t either! Don’t be afraid to stand out, don’t be afraid to offend people or have people think you’re weird. I would rather be weird my entire life then fit in with everyone for even a second.
You could not be doing any of this and I congratulate you! Always be on the lookout if you start reverting back to your “default” setting. All it takes is one insecure moment or just being human and doubting yourself.
