Jay Snook interviews Karan Ashley and learned much about The Order
I was one of those kids who grew up watching The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. I have been lucky to meet some of the cast like David Yost, Johnny Yong Bosch and Jason David Frank. When I was in Los Angeles I was able to interview Karan Ashley. For a while now her and some of the other former Power Rangers have been working on a film called The Order. Here is everything I learned from my interview.
What has it been like to be a part of the Power Ranger universe?
Karan Ashley: It’s amazing. We are one of the largest franchises. I mean, when we did the show we never thought that 23 years later we’d still be here. That we would still be traveling the world and talking about Power Rangers. Everybody still loves it. It is such a blessing and such a cool thing to be a part of. Every person that walks up to us turns out to be seven years old (laughs). They become seven again. So it is really nice to walk down memory lane with them.
What are your thoughts on the new Power Rangers movie?
Karan Ashley: I think it is great. I love that the franchise still keeps growing and still keeps going. I love it and I can’t wait to see it.
Where did the idea for The Order come from?
Karan Ashley: The idea came from just us all kind of being together. We have literally being doing Comic Cons for ten years now. And I would literally be around everyone going everybody is so talented and so amazing that I was like why are we not working together? There have been a couple times that the franchise has called us and wanted to bring us back and it never worked out. I was like I really would love for us to work together but I would love for us to work together and do something different. You know, we’ve got this. This I don’t feel like you can ever replace, The Mighty Morphin era of Power Rangers. You can never redo that. So we should do something different and David Fielding and myself got together and we started kicking around ideas. One thing I knew going in was I wanted to make sure we had good guys and bad guys but I wanted to cast all former Power Rangers. And we kind of just decided let’s just write a really good movie and then we will figure out who is going to be who and we’ll see what happens. And the minute we showed it to the cast they loved it. Here we are less than a year later and we are about to go into production.
What is the basic plot of The Order?
Karan Ashley: Well the basic plot is The Order are good guys. They are a group of people that shadow the FBI and the CIA. They are considered vigilantes because they don’t fall into any specific group. But what happens is with that comes a lot of power, a lot of ego. They are all living weapons and a few of them decide to make their own group called Chaos. So for the first time they are fighting each other. They are fighting their brothers and sisters and they are all equally equipped. It turns out to be pretty epic.
What is the progress on The Order right now?
Karan Ashley: We are going to start shooting at the end of January, we are going to shoot through February and we will go right into post-production right after. We just signed Nick Gillard, you know him from Star wars and quite a number of movies but he is our director. And we are just going to go and have some fun. We got five weeks of crazy (laughs).
Is the Indiegogo campaign still alive? If so, are fans still able to contribute to it?
Karan Ashley: Yes, it is still live. We reached our goal but it is still live. People can still contribute and participate. And we are getting the rest of our funding from outside investors. But we are scheduled to shoot.
What do you think could be the future for The Order?
Karan Ashley: You know honestly there is a very bright future. We are already writing a part two. We do have a version for TV, a spin-off. Not quite a web series but it would be more like a series that could be on Netflix or Hulu kind of thing. So yea we are going to see how the first one does. The first one will really predict what the other ones will do. We have already started writing the future.
What are the plans for premiering The Order? Could it premiere on Netflix, Digital HD or at a future covention?
Karan Ashley: All of the above (laughs). We have been talking literally to distributors and we’ve had a lot of people give us different scenarios. I think we are going to wait until we finish the movie and figure out what is the best opportunity for everyone and for the project. But yeah, I think any of those situations they are all going to happen. Because we do so many Comic Cons a year I think it would be crazy for us not to have something to go along with this. People really love it. It’s funny, now that we kicked off the kickstarter and The Order. We literally have in every city we go to people come up with their Order hats and their Order T-shirts. You know, it is like amazing. Or they come up and say ” You know I bought a one-liner in the movie So I am going to get to work with you in a few months.” People are excited and the fans really feel like they are a part of it. Because they contributed and because they are going to get to be in it. So it is just really amazing.
Where can people go to learn more information about The Order?
Karan Ashley: They can go to www.the-order-movie.com.
Is there anything else you would like to say to your fans before this interview comes to a close?
Karan Ashley: I just want to tell them thank you. Because we have gotten so much love, so much excitement. Obviously people have contributed. People have come and wrote letters saying ” I can’t contribute but I posted it on my wall. I talked about it with my friends.” I mean it is such a camaraderie of people that are super excited. And we are going to give them the reunion-ish movie they have been wanting. They wanted to see us together again and we are not going to be Power Rangers but they are going to see us together. They are going to get to see martial arts and they are going to get to see really cool stuff. So I am super excited for them to see how this all unfolds. Go to the website and we will keep them updated along the way.
