Like snowflakes,
no two branches are the same.
A uniqueness they share,
But give me the knotty branch
Over a sleek and sophisticated snowflake any day.
For no snowflake can be
Strong but flexible,
Rooted but flying through the air,
Grounded with years of experience but growing a little more every day…
And what of a snowflake?
A single drop of dog piss and it’s gone.
But the branches, witness to life tragic and life triumphant,
From lynchings to tiny cherubs in tire swings,
Withstanding the elements of time,
Continue to sway in the wind like reggae on a lazy afternoon.
Reminding us that the leaves of our past will die,
And how fruitful we are when we blossom again will be determined by the environment we create.
And that’s why I love them, the branches. I’ll take a knotty tree branch over a sleek and sophisticated snowflake any day.
